Have you ever looked at those anatomical pictures of the human body? The different sections of our insides always seem so tidy and separate from each other. Bones, muscles, organs; they all look like independent parts stacked neatly inside us…and all in primary colours!
However, we are rather more complex than that. Instead, everything is connected to everything else.
So, what is it that internally links us together?
That is something called ‘fascia’ or ‘connective tissue’. Fascia operates like a web that spans, infiltrates and attaches everything. Think of it like you are wearing an intricate onesie where movement in one area of the body affects all other areas of the body.
This fascia should be hydrated and glide effortlessly, and it does…if we move regularly and in a variety of ways. This gets the fibres criss-crossing and stretching in different directions.
However, if we don’t move or if we repeat the same movement patterns over and over (e.g., sitting at a desk all day), that’s when our onesie becomes tight, stiff, dehydrated and ‘knotty’.
So, remember, motion is lotion. Try to move in lots of different ways, and you’ll have a onesie that will last a lifetime!
